Hydrofracking and Horizontal Gas Drilling Coming to New York State
In September 2011, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) proposed an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to permit horizontal drilling for gas in our state. Despite the industry’s claims that the process is safe for public health and the environment, the proposed DEC Impact Statement is astounding in that it would ban hydrofracking in the New York City and Syracuse watersheds, acknowledging that the industrial technique is too dangerous for drinking water. Beyond New York City and Syracuse’s watersheds, the rest of New York State is now open and vulnerable to the impacts of hydrofracking. This is an appalling distinction. If you believe every citizen’s water should be safe to drink, take action.
